Btw., if the timeout is unbearable, it might be an interesting idea
to switch on reading passwd and group info from the files when the
VPN is not available.

The last snapshots contain a new version of the mkpasswd and mkgroup
tools which produce passwd and group entries with the same values
(especially uid and gid values!) as the "db" setting in Cygwin does.

The idea is that files and db don't contradict each other by default,
rather they provide the same values.  Therefore it might be a nice
addition to use the files in offline mode.
