The way I set the EDITOR var to nano is:

$ EDITOR=nano;

And if i type "EDITOR" nano editor is opened. But when I run crontab -e I
get the crontab edited by vi(m) again.
set | grep -i vi

Does the output of the above command give a clue?

No, not a clue. I get a line in which the "vi" chars appear as part of a larger word, but nothing to do with the editor. I tried with "vim" instead of "vi" too, but didn't work neither.

In any case thanks a lot for the hint :)
