These are not safe checks. I've got weird directory names created myself which contained control characters that rendered invisible...

Do either of:
   ls | od -ab
or
   ls | od -t ax1
or
   ls > ls
and inspect the output with a binary-transparent editor (e.g. mined :) )

ls -abF should work.
