I assume you meant "ln -s /cygdrive/c/downloads" above.
The answer to your question is to use '/bin/pwd'.
This is not a Cygwin-specific issue so further discussion of it is really
off-topic for this list. If you have further inquiries that you'd like to
make on this or other non-Cygwin issues, please find a forum dedicated to
your topic.
