I think you need to use the -P option:
$ ar t foobar.lib release\foo.obj release\bar.obj $ ar xv foobar.lib 'release\foo.obj' no entry release\foo.obj in archive $ ar xvP foobar.lib 'release\foo.obj' x - release\foo.obj
