Thanks to eveyone who tried to help me.
It runs (minimaly) and passes the first of the two
trivial tests given in the crm114 "How To" document
-- it seems to hang on the second (Hello, world!)
test, but the basic (make/link) problem is solved.

Now, to debug the program.
