treating drives as files

In UNIX, one can do things like
dd if=/dev/fd0 of=~/disk_image
Is this possible in Cygwin?
I tried
dd if=/cygdrive/d
and
dd if="D:"
but that doesn't work. Also, I googled up some suggestions in the
mailing list archives, but they didn't work either (Cygwin must have
changed since the question was asked)
