Actually, please don't.  I think you misinterpret the discussion in
cygwin-developers.  Now that you've reacquainted me with the discussion,
I remember why it wasn't applied as-is.  My plan was for /dev to go away
as a special mount.  Now that mknod works, this is more doable than it
was in 2002.

Why have a real /dev directory? I like having a dynamically populated /dev/-directory. I like Linux's devfs very much, and perhaps udev will be very much like it, but i don't guess that cygwin will have something like udev (an example where devices would be added/removed from /dev is, wehn a new CD-ROM is attached/removed etc.)
