newbie: configuring cygwin (path, home dir, profile, running PostgreSQL)

I need to run PostgreSQL on Windows-XP. I installed `cygwin`, but have gone through some very simple problems I hope somebody can help me with. I know these are very "simple" questions, but I can't seem to find the right way to go by looking at the FAQ or at the mail archives (in fact I don't know where to begin with...).

NOTE: there is another version of PostgreSQL for Windows installed on my system (UltraSQL), and that is the one that appears at my current path.

Please check out these sample sessions and the problems I am facing:

Here is my directory structure after installation is completed (no `/etc/profile` exists, also no `/home` directory exists)

Trying to run PostgreSQL:
------------------------

I had the following file under setup directory `cygipc`:

cygipc-2.02-1.tar.bz2

And under directory `/usr/bin` after installation I can find no `ipc-daemon` executable, only

`ipc-daemon2.exe`:

bash-2.05b$ pwd
/usr/bin

bash-2.05b$ ls -al ipc* -rwxr-x---+ 1 My Usern Users 20992 Oct 17 02:25 ipc-daemon2.exe -rwxr-x---+ 1 My Usern Users 3007 Aug 5 10:31 ipcclean -rwxr-x---+ 1 My Usern Users 1665 Oct 17 04:29 ipck -rwxr-x---+ 1 My Usern Users 5120 Oct 17 04:30 ipcrm.exe -rwxr-x---+ 1 My Usern Users 7680 Oct 17 04:30 ipcs.exe -rwxr-x---+ 1 My Usern Users 11264 Oct 17 02:25 ipctest.exe

Is this file (`ipc-daemon2.exe`) the one I should run??? See my session output:

bash-2.05b$ ipc-daemon2.exe &
[1] 3096
bash-2.05b$ mkdir /var/psql

bash-2.05b$ initdb -D /var/psql

Any hints on where I should start configuring my environment? Was there some problem with the

installation or is this a matter of post-installation setups?

TIA,
teufel
