python 2.2.2.7 - commands.getstatusoutput problems

Hi,
I'm trying to use the commands module and running into problems with getstatusoutput. It appears to go off and exectue a command (using popen) but always returns 0xFF00 (signal 0, return value -1), and throws no exceptions.
Anybody any ideas as to what might be going on?
