Unable to do clean uninstall

I wanted to update my old cygwin (installed under
C:\cygwin), so I installed the new one under
C:\cygwin1. Then I deleted the old one, and renamed
the new one to C:\cygwin. However, most programs did
not work. Instead of sorting out the paths, I decided
to do a fresh install all over again. I deleted the
C:\cygwin directory, and the temporary download
directory on my desktop. I looked everywhere to make
sure that there was no files hanging around. Then I
downloaded cygwin all over again (using setup.exe) and
installed it under C:\cygwin. However, there still
seems to be some 'memory' about my previous cygwin
install. While most of the software went under
C:\cygwin, it still created C:\cygwin1. All the X11
fonts were installed under C:\cygwin1. The fonts
directory was missing under C:\cygwin. I am not sure
where setup.exe got this information from. If I
manually move the fonts directory to C:\cygwin, X11
refuses to run.
I am puzzled where the install program is getting the
old directory name from. Cygwin must be leaving
something behind in my computer that I don't know
about.
Any ideas?
