Via email, I asked this question of Karsten about a week ago.
Karsten, if you did not wish this email known publically my apologies.

Here is his reply:

  Jon,

ksh93 should compile fine on Cygwin. Just follow the instructions on AT&T's
download site. The reason I delayed the package release, is that the Cygwin
maintainers want the whole package restructured. I'm currently in NYC and have
talked to David Korn about how to create an AST package for Cygwin.

I'll release the package when I'm back home.

  Karsten

BTW I downloaded the INIT and ast-ksh packages, unpackaged them to an empty dir.
Then copied ksh and the manpage to the /usr tree. Seem to work fine.

One thing, have /cygwin.bat scripts been developed that use the shell field of
the password file to startup shells other than bash?
