Strange. Me have (as expected from this nice onliner:
$ /usr/bin/perl -e '$x=system("wc",".bashrc");$y=system("wc <.bashrc");print"$x $y $!\n";'
211 539 6250 .bashrc
211 539 6250
0 0
What about permissions?
