how2 read value of DOS env var containing a "." ?

Can any one figure out how to read the value of
a DOS environmental variable that contains a "." in it's
name. I would like to stay in a bash shell (ie
avoid using perl, and avoid invoking cmd.exe).

thanks,

Tom
