True but Cygwin would have to drop the existing symlink convention and
either refuse to support it or provide a tool to convert any of the current
style to the new to make your proposal reasonable. Its not impossible but
I'm guessing the confusion that would ensue will keep it from happening as
you suggest, at least for quite a while.
