slow command execution

recently i'm often having problems that cygwin (and some other apps)
lock up or otherwise respons very slow. it kind of reminds me of the
glorious times i was working on unix and cursing NFS :)

what happens is that each command execution (in bash) takes 2 to 5
seconds before it starts; this is especially bad when running make
which invokes the shell hundred of times.

i don't think this is caused by cygwin, but i'm wondering if there's
a way of tracking down why and where the shell locks up and maybe
change the configuration so cygwin is not affected.

any ideas/hints?

thanks,
roman
