bad screen number "0" when trying to run tk

I have compiled tk8.0.5 (the unix sub-tree, I want it to using an Xserver
not the Win32 APIs) but when I try to run the wish I get the following error
message:
Application initialization failed: bad screen number "0"
The other X bins work fine, like xlogo etc. I tried mapping the display
to another system (unix box), again xlogo and such work fine but tk fails
with the above error message.
What do I need to tweak in tk to get it to work?
Thanks,
Michael
