concept I introduced, particularly in this case where a test case has
been kindly provided by the bug reporter...

Rob,

providing a test case for a race condition like that is a bit difficult. It took about half an hour on my celeron 1000 W2000 box until the race condition occured. I don't think that a testcase should run that long.
