Setup.exe Reuse

Folks,

I'm interested in using the Cygwin setup.exe as a net installer for a variety
of related open source packages in the geospatial sphere, but independent of
cygwin. I've read http://sourceware.org/cygwin-apps/setup.html which seems
to suggest this is a reasonable idea, and has been done successfully by the
XEmacs project for instance. It also suggests that I let folks know here.

I'm interested in feedback from anyone else who has done something similar,
or suggestions on approach.

I'm generally looking to package things in a manner similar to how
cygwin does (fine grained, versioned, dependencies) and normally to install
in one tree. However, I anticipate a few packages may actually be installed
outside the tree from distinct installers (.msi, .exe and so forth)

One other item that comes to mind is licensing. I'm happy to have our
setup.exe under GPL, but is it a problem if some of my packages are non-free?
I assume not...

Should I just plan to fork setup for my purposes or is there interest in
cooperating to make setup more reusable as a net installer for other projects?
I don't anticipate all that many changes but if there is interest I would
be willing to do them in a way that could be integrated back into the
upstream without undue disruption. Stuff like making the suite name
configurable in the build, possibly adding a splash screen, etc.

Lastly, I would like to thank the Cygwin developers and packages while I'm
speaking up anyways. I've been a happy cygwin user for roughly a decade and
it has made the time I have to spend on windows substantially less painful
than it might have been. :-)

Best regards,
