But will not the results be versioned?

I.e:
package-b-1.1-1-src.tar.bz2
package-b-1.1-1.tar.bz2
package-b-2.1-1-src.tar.bz2
package-b-2.1-1.tar.bz2

(But this does not refute your other arguments, of course)
