As James said, an interesting idea.  However...

Why the capitalized names?

I would compress the log files -- they're only there for reference, and
place them in a separate archive (again, as James suggested).

I'm also a bit wary of polluting the source directory with yet more
files...

Also, please make sure your ChangeLog is formatted properly, and please
attach the patch instead of including it inline.
